Product launch video vs launch post: which works harder?

An animated launch video or a simple launch post? We compare cost, reach and results, and explain when to use each, or both.

The short answer: for most launches, an animated product launch video does more than a launch post on its own. It shows how a product looks, works and feels in seconds. The strongest launches use both: the video is the hero, and posts carry it to where your customers are. A post-only launch makes sense when the product is simple, the budget is tight, or the news itself is the story.

Here’s how to tell which situation you’re in.

What’s the difference between a launch post and a launch video?

A launch post is a static announcement: a product photo or graphic with a caption, shared on social media, a blog or a newsletter. It’s quick and cheap to make.

An animated product launch video is a produced piece, usually 15 to 60 seconds, that shows the product in motion. That might be 2D motion graphics, a 3D product animation or a mix of both. It takes more time and budget, but it can do things a still image can’t.

What does the data say?

Video’s track record in marketing is well documented, though most figures come from surveys and vendors, so treat them as directional.

  • Wyzowl’s 2026 survey, as reported by SocialPilot, found that 85% of people say they’ve been convinced to buy a product or service after watching a video. That covers video in general, not only product launches.

  • Wistia’s widely cited figure is that visitors spend roughly 2.6 times longer on pages with video, as repeated in this roundup.

  • Product pages with video are often reported to convert better than image-only pages. Figures range from the 20 to 60% region to much higher, and many come from companies that sell video, so read them with care. See this overview.

One honest caveat: we couldn’t find a controlled study that compares a launch video head-to-head with a launch post. The evidence shows video performs well. It doesn’t prove video beats a post for every product.

When is a launch post enough?

A well-made post is the smarter choice when:

  • The product is simple and a photo explains it.

  • The launch is about news (a new location, a collaboration, a price change) rather than the product itself.

  • The budget or timeline is tight.

  • You want to test interest before investing in production.

When is an animated video worth it?

Video earns its cost when:

  • The product is complex. Features like internal mechanisms or software interfaces are hard to show in a photo.

  • It’s premium. Cinematic motion signals quality before anyone reads a word.

  • It’s hard to photograph. Tiny, reflective, transparent or still-in-prototype products are easier and cleaner in 3D.

  • You’ll reuse it. One film can become paid ads, a product page hero, social cutdowns and a trade show loop.

For example, for the Interdesk Ultra standing desk we built a 3D launch film that shows concealed cable routing in an x-ray view and breaks down the three-stage lifting frame. A still photo can’t show either. See the Interdesk Ultra case study.

The best answer: use both

You rarely need to choose. A simple sequence works well:

  1. Tease with a short post or motion snippet before launch.

  2. Launch with the full video as your hero asset on your product page and key channels.

  3. Extend with cutdowns (15 and 30 seconds, vertical and square) and still posts pulled from the video.

  4. Keep going with static posts for updates, offers and reviews.

The video does the heavy lifting, and posts keep it visible.

How much does a launch video cost, and how long does it take?

It depends on length, style and 2D versus 3D. As a guide, a 30 to 45 second 3D product animation typically takes around four working weeks, and most of our commercial projects land around $5,000 and up. Simpler pieces can cost less. We break it all down in how much a 3D product animation costs.

How do you decide? A quick checklist

Choose a launch video if you answer yes to two or more:

  • Is the product complex or hard to photograph?

  • Will you run it as an ad or on your product page?

  • Do you want it to look premium next to bigger competitors?

  • Can you wait a few weeks?

Otherwise, start with a launch post, and add video when the product earns it.

FAQ

Is a product launch video better than a launch post?

Usually for complex or premium products, because video shows features and quality in motion. For simple products or quick news, a post can be enough.

How long should a product launch video be?

Most run 15 to 60 seconds. Shorter cutdowns work for social, and a longer hero version suits your product page.

Can I use a launch video across more than one channel?

Yes. That’s one of its biggest advantages: ads, product pages, social, email and events can all use it.

Do I need both a video and posts?

Not always, but they work well together. The video is the main asset, and posts keep it in front of people.

Final thought: a post tells people you’ve launched. A video shows them why they should care. Need help deciding which you need? Book a quick call, and we’ll tell you honestly.
