Explainer Videos
2D vs 3D animation: which is right for your product?
Flat, friendly 2D or cinematic 3D? A simple way to choose the right animation style for your product, budget and audience.

The short answer: choose 3D when you’re selling a physical product and want it to look real and premium. Choose 2D when you’re explaining an idea, a service or software, and clarity matters more than realism. Many of the best videos mix both.
What’s the difference?
2D animation uses flat shapes, illustration, type and interface graphics. Think explainer videos, app walkthroughs and social ads with bold colour and character.
3D animation builds your product as a 3D model and films it with virtual cameras and lights. Think cinematic product commercials, exploded views and close-ups of materials.
How do they compare?
2D animation | 3D animation | |
|---|---|---|
Best for | Ideas, services, software, explainers | Physical products, launches, premium brands |
Look | Flat, graphic, illustrative | Realistic, cinematic, tactile |
Typical timeline | Two to four weeks | Around four weeks and up |
Cost | Usually lower | Usually higher |
Easy to update later | Very | Yes, once the model exists |
When to choose 2D
You’re explaining something abstract. Like how an app saves time, or how a service works behind the scenes.
Your product is software. Clean interface animation shows features more clearly than a screen recording. Our Wix explainer is a good example.
You want a friendly, branded feel. Illustration and character can carry personality that realism can’t.
You need it fast or on a tighter budget.
When to choose 3D
You sell a physical product. 3D shows shape, materials and finish in a way customers can almost touch.
It has hidden features. Internal mechanisms, cable routing or moving parts can be shown in cutaways and x-ray views, like in our Interdesk Ultra film.
It’s premium. Lighting, reflections and slow camera moves signal quality instantly.
It doesn’t exist yet. You can launch with stunning visuals before the first unit ships.
Why not both?
Mixing 2D and 3D often gives you the best of both. A 3D product can sit inside a 2D graphic world, or 2D interface elements can float around a 3D device. Our PS5 DualSense piece pairs a 3D controller with 2D GUI graphics to explain its features.
A quick way to decide
Is your product physical? Lean 3D.
Is the hardest part to explain an idea or a process? Lean 2D.
Do you need it to feel premium next to bigger competitors? Lean 3D.
Do you need it in two weeks? Lean 2D, or a short 3D loop.
FAQ
Is 3D animation always more expensive?
Usually, because it needs modelling, materials and rendering. A short 3D loop can still cost less than a long 2D explainer. See how much a 3D product animation costs for the details.
Which works better for social media?
Both can stop the scroll. What matters most is a strong first second, bold visuals and a clear message, in either style.
Can you turn a 2D video into 3D later?
Yes. The storyboard and script carry over, so it’s like starting a sequel rather than from scratch.
